Iberian Halophytes as Agroecological Solutions for Degraded Lands and Biosaline Agriculture

نویسندگان

چکیده

Research on biosaline agriculture has been increasing worldwide in recent years. In this respect, the Iberian halophyte diversity present a high-value ecological solution to be implemented for biosaline-based agroecosystems. The research these halophytic species and, years, especially terms saline adaptation, osmophysiology and nutraceutical potential, highlighting importance potential of agrosolutions. Mediterranean area high biodiversity endemic vegetation (ca. 62 species), providing an alternative pool new agricultural products cultivated adverse conditions. Besides being highly diverse, most are perennial life cycle with several applications food, forage, nutraceutical, feedstock remediation. More specifically, flora shows as resources essential fatty acids, minerals antioxidants—all very important human animal nutrition. Alongside establishment agroecological solutions is provision key ecosystem services, such carbon sequestration soil rehabilitation. Moreover, halophyte-based ecosystems provide additional recognized beyond final product production, by improving health, storing large amounts carbon, thereby resilience climate change offering green against change.

Mapping the world's degraded lands

Degraded lands have often been suggested as a solution to issues of land scarcity and as an ideal way to meet mounting global demands for agricultural goods, but their locations and conditions are not well known. Four approaches have been used to assess degraded lands at the global scale: expert opinion, satellite observation, biophysical models, and taking inventory of abandoned agricultural l...

Use of Frankia and Actinorhizal Plants for Degraded Lands Reclamation

Degraded lands are defined by soils that have lost primary productivity due to abiotic or biotic stresses. Among the abiotic stresses, drought, salinity, and heavy metals are the main threats in tropical areas. These stresses affect plant growth and reduce their productivity. Nitrogen-fixing plants such as actinorhizal species that are able to grow in poor and disturbed soils are widely planted...

Halophytes As Bioenergy Crops

Shrinking arable land due to soil salinization and, depleting fresh water resources pose serious worldwide constraints to crop productivity. A vision of using plant feedstock for biofuel production can only be realized if we can identify alternate species that can be grown on saline soils and therefore, would not compete for the resources required for conventional agriculture. Halophytes have r...
